Direct Line Car Insurance Breakdown

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

The breakdown cover is a highly competitive one within the UK that is dominated by 3 big names the AA, RAC and Green Flag. There are other companies offering services that match these 3 and some that represent the old fashioned motoring club, but in terms of branding these organisations are the best known.

The AA

Originally born as the Automobile Association over a century ago and is currently deemed the largest breakdown cover organisation based on they employ more dedicated patrolmen than anyone else, rather than using third party services. They are part of the Acromas Holdings group that includes other insurance companies such as Saga. The AA does not just offer breakdown cover or insurance, they have for years been involved in travel from awarding stars to hotels and restaurants to printing maps. A reputable driving school and finance services are also added to their services. The AA started as a motoring club when even then there were police speed traps. Then this motoring club just grew and grew over the century.

The RAC

Originally known as the Royal Automobile Club (which still survives in Pall Mall London), but now simply known as the RAC also provides breakdown cover nationally with a mixture of employed patrolmen and third part garages. The RAC is now owned by Aviva and offer legal checks route finders, insurance and driving lessons a big difference from their start in 1897. Even in 1901 the RAC introduced uniformed patrols and has been at the forefront of motoring since then.

Green Flag

Born in 1971 as the National breakdown recovery service, Green Flag is really a network of garages, recovery agents and engineers all coming together to cover the UK mainland. Green Flag is owned by the Royal bank of Scotland that also owns insurance companies like Direct Line and Churchill. Often these insurance companies sell breakdown cover under their own brand, but it will be the Green Flag agents that will service the contract.

Of course it is less about patrols now and more about technology communicating with the breakdown vans or recovery vehicles, which means that most breakdown cover organisation promise to be on the scene in less than an hour and some say 30 minutes. Rather than being a motoring club who works with its members these are insurance company run to compliment other vehicle insurance and are regulated by he Financial services Authority.

It is also true that the modern vehicle does not breakdown in the ay it used to 30 or 40 years ago. Call outs tend to be for general issues such as a flat battery, flat tyres or even being locked out of your car. And when you consider the cost of basic roadside assistance from any breakdown cover provider, you will see that these emergency services have never been cheaper in real terms. In fact all 3 of these big breakdown cover organisation offer their basic roadside package cheaper than a tank of fuel in an average sized car.
